International Flight Experience to Shanghai, China

March 22nd- March 24th, 2008

So It's been quite the experience so far... The trip was very LONG!!! I arrived at the airport early and got checked in. First experience... no personal space!! The woman behind me in line liked to stand two inches away from me. Second experience... I proceed to my gate when it was time to board, I was looking for a sign that said B because that's what my zone was (like southwest does), anyways I stood there for a while and still no B. I saw A and C but no B. Now what??? I proceed to ask someone for help but that was funny... he didn't speak english.. duh kristina! He just said yes!! so I stood in that line and figured it would be okay. Thank goodness it was. Once they checked my ticket I proceeded through the gate to board the plane. WRONG!! We walked down some stairs and then outside.. huh.. where's the plane... I figured just follow and hopefully you'll get on the right plane. Well... we got on a bus instead (packed like sardines) then the gentleman in front of me..well lets just say he was very close to me. I couldn't believe how tight his jeans were. Apparently, some of the Asian airlines don't want to pay the terminal fee so that's why they were parked elsewhere.
Okay so now I'm finally on the plane. it's about 12:45am Sunday morning. I couldn't wait to go to sleep. I flew a 777 over. There was approx. 300+ people on the aircraft. I of course was towards the back of the plane. I did have an aisle seat with no one next to me!! It was great! I got to know the girl in my row very well. I will tell you more about her later. Okay so I want to go to sleep.. well not just yet. We finally take off and are in the air about 1:00 am. the lights were off and I was ready to close my eyes. that ended 5 min later. the lights were turned on and I was handed a hot towel to wash my hands and face. Interesting..., so I proceed to do what everyone else was. okay now it's time for sleep. Nope, I was given a menu. what?!? dinner at this hour.. All I want to do is sleep not eat. As I looked over the menu I had 2 choices, both Korean food and yes Kimchi was on it. There was a choice of some kind of beef and spicy octopus over rice. um... no thank you I'd rather starve. At that point I really thought I was going to be losing a lot of weight the next 30 days. The funny thing is when I finally went to sleep I woke up at one point to turn a bit and I guess the lady thought I was hungry because I was given a sandwich. hmmmm language barrier.
The flight was 13 hours. the flight went well just very long. the plane was very clean which was nice. So I made it to Korea at 6:00am Monday morning I missed Sunday altogether. I had a 3 hour and 40 min layover in Seoul. The girl, Connie, who was sitting next to me on the plane was going to CHina as well, so we were able to talk and walk around together. THank goodness because it would have taken me quite some time to figure out where exactly to go for my next flight.
By this time I was starting to stink. No shower for almost 16 hours. yuck! My second flight was good. It was only an hour and 30 min long and we were given a huge meal... did I eat it? just the rice. I brought my own cup of noodle. I thought how interesting...I would have maybe been given a little bag of nuts on a domestic flight in the states, not some huge meal.
So I finally made it to China. Shannon has her own driver.. Mr. John. He's been taking us everywhere. There is no way I could drive here. You really have to have some skills. I thought I was going to die the first 20 min I was here. Mr. John is a great driver, but others like to get an inch away from you. crazy! I've eaten at a couple of places that have been pretty good. The grocery store was interesting. Esp.. the meat department. I'll just leave it for your imagination. I took some pics to show you later. I saw a little baby today with an interesting outfit on. THeir pants have a split in the front and back. I asked Shannon why and she said that they can't afford diapers so there's a split in the pants for them to go to the bathroom. I guess they start potty training at 6 months. I thought that was interesting and gross at the same time.
The trip has been amazing so far!
